How we make lifestyle decisions is governed by a set of needs and desires that individuals strive to fulfill: health, nutrition, affection, creation (such as social innovation), participation (such as social movements), understanding (such as social integration), identity, freedom, protection, betterment and subsistence. Though these elements are important to each of us, each person’s interpretation of them is unique and driven by the circumstances of their life and the world around them. Currently, the consumption-driven lifestyles of some of us, particularly in developed countries, is putting enormous pressure on nature’s ability to provide the resources we need and yet stay within planetary boundaries.
